soil for kids.....still under construction - oopse - the images don't match the descriptions - still working on it
We need to put life back into the soil I didn’t even know soil had life, well maybe I knew about earthworms,
but millions of critters in a teaspoon, how do they all fit? Lets
take a look close up, under a microscope… ...if you
click on the pictures you can see them move

Wow, things are definitely running around in there, what do they
all do? They feed plants….. How do they do that? The
big guys eat the little guys and their poop feeds the plants. The
guys you see swimming around are called protozoa , they come in three models, the smaller shapes bumbling around
are called flagellates, their tail that propel them but have a hard time going in a straight line.

The bigger fatter guys moving around are called ciliates, they have little
propellers all around them that make them move fast, they are the race car drivers (if you look close, they
are transparent, and you can see little dots of food inside them, they have just eaten their lunch of bacteria- yum!) .

You probably can’t see the third ones unless you are really patient,
they move veeeeerrrry slowly, actually they don’t really swim, they ooze around, they are called amoeba.

The really small dots that the bigger guys are pushing around and chomping
on are bacteria, everyone seems to like to eat them. The bacteria eat things that were once alive, such as the
scraps from your kitchen, so you will find the bacteria hanging around clumps of food.
